John Whelpton is a researcher on Nepali history and politics who was a college lecturer with Tribhuvan University from 1972 to 1974 and has lived in Hong Kong since 1987. His publications include A History of Nepal (Cambridge 2005) and ‘Political Violence in Nepal from Unification to Janandolan I: The Background to “People’s War”’ in Marie Lecomte-Tilouine (ed.), Revolution in Nepal: An Anthropological and Historical Approach to the People’s War (New Delhi 2013). He also delivered the 2024 Mahesh Chandra Regmi Lecture entitled Revisiting the Yam and the Rocks: Nepal Between India and China.
